Happy Halloween! Frankenstorm Cookies

NYC and NJ are still reeling from the effects of the Frankenstorm (Hurricane Sandy) that hit on Monday, but I am happy to report that our building suffered no damage or power outages. We are so very fortunate. The devastation seen on TV has been horrific. Subways are still closed (with limited service beginning tomorrow) and school canceled this week due to the storm.

The time off allowed me to do some Halloween baking. I had planned to bake cookies for my students, but now it looks like they won't get them until Monday (if they last that long!).
I had planned to give these cute pumpkin cookies to my AP English class.  The smiles and upset faces probably reflect the students' feelings about not being in school this week. While I'm sure some are happy with the time off, others I'm sure are ready to get back into the routine.
I wanted to do something other than your traditional jack o-lantern, so I came up with the idea of adding a ghost. The spider was a last second addition that I think makes the whole design complete.
The last cookie I created was a spider web cookie. I love the way the colors blend together in this design and how complex it looks. The effect is created simply by dragging a toothpick through the wet royal icing.

Since teachers have to report to school on Friday (with no kids), I plan to bring them to work in hopes of sweetening everyone's day.

I hope you all have a Happy Halloween!
